We had a pleasant drive for the most part from Whitehorse to Dawson. There were several areas of minor construction and one 1 km area of gravel that tried to shake the motorhome apart, even at 10-15 mph. Rick will remember a similar road I took him on in Colorado in 2005. At times we were able to hit 90-100 for long stretches. (of course, that's km/h, not mph) We crossed the Yukon River a few times and drove by many beautiful lakes. Mostly tall pine/spruce trees and birch and aspen. There have been many forest fires along the way and they are marked by the year they occurred. The trees have grown back nicely in most areas.
Not far from Dawson, we saw what appeared to be two large dogs on the road ahead. As we got closer, we realized they were wild cats, not dogs. They were not in a hurry to get out of our way, which gave us time to stop and take a couple pics before they headed in opposite directions and disappeared into the woods.
Grandkids Only contest #2
The first to corectly identify the cat will get 5 loonies.

We are getting ready to tour downtown Dawson. So I will report on our adventures later.

OK, I have been following your progress on Google maps and up until today I understood, but why did you decide to go from Whitehorse to Dawson if you are heading to Fairbanks. It looks like that's the long way around. Why not go up the Alaska highway?

Are the cats Bobcats?

P.S.
Miss You!!
Forgot to ask... What are loonies anyway?

Samantha
Fred, a good question. We (I) wanted to go on the Top of the World Highway, supposedly a very scenic route thru the Yukon and into Tok, Alaska. The TOW Highway starts at Dawson City. On the return trip, we will take the part of the Alaska Highway we missed.

Samantha, you may be right, but I think it's another type of cat. If I'm wrong, you will be the proud owner of 5 loonies. A loonie is a Canadian dollar coin.

Hello! Its Mandy trying to see if I can win a different cousin contest! I looked at a few pictures, and the little, stubby-tailed wild cat you saw on the road near Dawson looks a lot like a lynx. So that's my guess: a lynx. Can't wait to hear from you both!!! Hope the wildlife continues to be as interesting as it has so far, with the triplets of bears, the stone sheep, and this wild cat! Love you lots!!!
ReplyDeleteMandy <3 (That's a heart)
Ana says "Canadian Lynx" (Lynx canadensis).
ReplyDeleteMandy, you did it AGAIN! Brilliant! Yes , it's a lynx. If you look at the time of the posts, you beat Ana by 6 minutes. Congratulations!

Yay! I am kind of obsessing over these fun little competitions. Thanks again for creating them. They are better than soduko puzzles! :) Well have a great night and enjoy the rest of your journey to Alaska! You're almost there!!!
