Yesterday, Tuesday, we came into Seward and drove around town before we decided on a campground. We first stopped at the Alaska Sealife Center. It is a very nice facility with plenty of hands-on displays for kids as well as a nice selection of native wildlife.

After leaving the sealife center, we drove along the fjord and were delighted to see campgrounds run by the city of Seward right along the coastline. We picked out our site, with water and electric, and just happened to have free wifi here.

What a view, aye?
We had a fine dinner at Ray's Seafood, which included Alaskan king crab legs......fantastic....better than lobster. Later we booked our cruise for Wednesday and called it a day.
Our cruise was from 11:30 to 5:30 Wednesday, June 17, and cruised around Kenai Fjords National Park. It was overcast when we left and went downhill from there. It was cold and windy and it also rained lightly most of the time out in open water. However, that did not deter me from being out on deck getting as many pictures as I could, frozen fingers and all. Here are the fruits of my labor.

Sea otters are everywhere. They just float on the waves bobbing up and down without a care eating or cleaning themselves.

We were informed there are many types of gulls (seagulls is not a type) and these are pics of their breeding grounds. Regardless, they are all still very messy as you can see by the 'paintings' on the second pic.

We saw several glaciers, but did not approach this one because of ice floes.

We approached this glacier within about 200 yards and were fortunate to see some small calving. It is an awesome sight.

After leaving the glacier, we came upon several humpback whales. Most were just lolling on the surface with only their humpbacks showing, but one did 'sound' (dive) showing its tail as it dove deep. Unfortunately, I missed the picture.

There were also puffins floating around.

And the ever-present lazy sea otters.

These are steller seals. There is also a live camera which feeds back to the Alaska Sealife Center.

And finally our beachfront motohome as we returned from the tour.

P.S. I was minutes away from completing this entry when I lost the internet back in Seward. I just finished it from Wasilla after a trip back to Whittier and a second cruise from Whittier today, Friday June 19.
More to follow.....stay tuned.

Wow you guys really got some nice pictures...I'm not surprised though. You're kinda a professional at photography by now. Anyway, I love the little sea otter pictures. :) They are soooo cute! Oh and I thought the igloo (not made from snow) in your previous blog was really cool. Hope you continue to have fun! I miss you!

Still enjoying the pictures and commentary. Y'all are doing a great job of showing us the area, almost like being there. Happy Father's Day today.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the temps there? It's been 97 or so here in sunny Alabama for the last week.
Thanks Fred, and a Happy Father's Day to you too.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, but when we were up north in Fairbanks it got up into the mid 80's a couple days. However since we left that area the temps have been mostly in the 60's (T-shirt weather;)) with overnight lows in the 40-50 range. We did have a few nights early on in the trip around 30. The weather changes rapidly. Anyway, have a good day....Ron
